Need Buick Regal Parts?

Introduced in the early 1970s, the Buick Regal has had an up and down history, and has taken on various forms over the years. Debuting first as a coupe targeted to the luxury consumer, it evolved into a mid-size sedan, then to a performance vehicle, and continuing to go back and forth as the times changed. It also disappeared for a few years, but was resurrected in 2010. The Regal has managed to keep going in the market, but sometimes wear and tear of parts occur like with any vehicle. A Regal Car Debuts

The Regal was one of Buick’s personal luxury cars during its first six years. It debuted in 1972 as a 1973 model coupe with a 350ci or 455ci V8. A mid-size sedan debuted in 1974 and the Regal was the first mid-size sedan in the United States to include a V6 in the lineup. Built on the A-body chassis, this generation had the largest Regals with a V-shaped hood, chromed bumper, and a slim and sleek front and back end. It also came with opera windows and large body lines.

To the Future and Back Again

As a new generation appeared in 1978, lasting through the 1987 year, the Regal slimmed itself down. It was much lighter than the previous model and received a much more modest and aerodynamic styling. One of its greater attractions was a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6. By 1982, a 4.1L V6 was included, but many opted for the turbocharged V6 with 180 horsepower. The stealthy and performance focused Grand National and GNX versions of the Regal were introduced in this generation as well.

By 1988 a “new generation” of the Regal was introduced, returning the car back to Buick's original concept in being offered only as a coupe and targeted at the personal luxury buyer. A performance option or edition was no longer offered, and it switched to front-wheel drive for the first time. The V8 and turbocharged V6 engines were gone, and it only came as a coupe until 1990 when, due to the declining personal luxury car market, the Regal was offered as a mid-size sedan once again. The Regal changed its identity from a car with spunk to a banal mid-size vehicle.

The fourth generation debuted in 1997 as a four-door sedan on a revised W-body which was found in the previous generation. A Gran Sport (GS) supercharged version producing 240 hp was available, and was the fastest Buick since the Grand National days. Unfortunately the Regal struggled and Buick finally pulled the plug on it in the United States in 2004, replacing it in 2005 by the Buick LaCrosse, also built on the W platform. This generation of the Regal did continue to sell in China through 2008.

The Regal Makes a Comeback

Six years later, it was announced the fifth generation Regal, which had been available in China since 2009, would return to the United States, built on the same platform used in GM’s German brand the Opel Insignia. The car debuted in 2011 and it offered a CXL version with a 2.4L I4 with 182 hp. The Regal was destined to turn back to its performance days as well by offering a GS and Turbo model soon after, in addition to the luxury sedan base version. Never the less, despite the connotations associated with the old Regal, the current Regal is new and improved. It offers a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with 259 hp, all-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual with the GS trim. Apart from the AWD, the Regal still comes as a FWD model with common amenities such as heated seats, climate control, rear-parking assistant, an eight inch display screen, and adaptive cruise control. Designating itself much further from what it once was in the ‘90s, the Regal is a sedan that can offer some kick and quiet comfort for a comfortable, smooth drive.
