The Century Debuts and Reaches New Milestones

The Buick Century was originally conceived in 1936 and was named the Century in hopes of creating a production car that could reach 100 miles per hour. Production continued until 1942 with a 320 cubic inch inline 8-cylinder engine that could produce 120 horsepower. It was revived in 1954 with a 322ci V8 that could kick 200 horsepower. A small platform and a big engine was the design for the Century. The result was a stylish car that could zip past anyone with its light weight, making it an attractive choice for highway patrol and cops in need of a vehicle that could handle a hot pursuit. Choices ranged from a sedan and Riviera hardtop coupe to a convertible and four-door station wagon. It was laced in chrome with its signature sleek stripe down the side, three portholes (dubbed "VentiPorts"), and wraparound bumper. It also had innovative features like an electric clock and a trunk light.

The following year, the horsepower was bumped up to 236 and it added two more doors to the Riviera hardtop body, creating the first four-door hardtop ever made. The next year, the sedan followed the same path, and the horsepower was bumped up once again, this time to 255. Production then halted in 1958 while Buick redesigned its entire line for 1959.

The Century Returns and Then Fades Away into Time

The Century returned in 1973 as a mid-size sedan, wagon, or coupe with rear-wheel drive. The early models had great performance in relation to the government restrictions of the time. The coupes offered a Gran Sport (GS) option that could sport a 455ci V8 with 250 horsepower. Eventually, 231ci V6s were introduced to keep up with regulations. A Luxus trim was optional that eventually became known as the Custom trim. By the late 1970s, the Special and Limited trims were also available, and the body was designed into a more slanted and boxier look than its curved, smooth, and chiseled sides of the early 1970s.

When the Century reached a new peak in the 1980s, it abandoned the slanted fastback rear window/trunk style and stuck with a more modern look. It converted to front-wheel drive and offered a 2.5L I4 with 110 horsepower or a 2.8L V6 with 125 horsepower dropping the V8 entirely. By the 1990s, the Century offered a 120 horsepower I4 or a 160 horsepower V6 with a three-speed automatic as the standard. Eventually, in its final generation, the only available option was a mid-size sedan body. With the discontinuation of the Skylark, the Buick Century would become Buicks' entry-level model. A timeless approach to styling was employed, and relatively few differences exist between the 1997 and final 2004 models. Replaced by the Buick Lacrosse, the Buick Century had one final model with a Special Edition trim produced for 2005 to commemorate over three decades of service.
