Choose your Asuna Model
Asuna was a captive import automobile brand created in 1991 for the Canadian market by General Motors (GM) as a counterpart to the Geo marque. The brand went defunct in 1994 and the company was disestablished in 1995.
During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, prior to the arrival of the Asuna marque, GM introduced two captive import brands in Canada: Passport and Geo (branded initially as Chevrolets). These vehicles were built overseas but sold under the GM name through its own dealer distribution system. The first was Geo, which was introduced in 1988 and offered at Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Cadillac dealers. Geo products were sold in Canada first as Chevrolet’s, until 1992 when the Geo marque was introduced there; it had been introduced in North America in 1988 and began selling there in 1989. The second was Passport, which was a Canadian car dealership network that was owned by GM. Passport sold its own branded vehicle, the Passport Optima, which was a Daewoo made badge engineered version of the Opel Kadett E, with the original version being of the badge engineered vehicle being called the Daewoo Lemans. The vehicle was released to the Canadian Market in 1991. Passport also sold a selection of Isuzu and Saab vehicles as well.
In 1991, General Motors Canada decided to change their branding strategy and disbanded Passport. The Passport Optima was then rebadged as the Pontiac Lemans which, starting in 1988, was no longer a uniquely designed and engineered model and was now a badge engineered Daewoo LeMans just like the Passport Optima had been. Isuzu was grouped together along with Saab and, oddly enough, GM's new Saturn division which was established to combat the success of Japanese automobile imports in the U.S, thus forming Saturn-Saab-Isuzu dealerships. Geo vehicles had sold fairly successfully during this period, prompting Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealers to request that GM Canada provide a lineup of similar imported vehicles that they could sell at their dealerships. Thus, the Asuna marque was born in order to fulfill this demand.
Three badge engineered vehicles were released under the Asuna marque: the Asuna SE / GT, the Asuna Sunrunner, and the Asuna Sunfire. The Asuna Sunfire, first released in Canada in 1992, was a rebadged Isuzu Impulse; The Asuna Sunrunner, first released in 1992, was a rebadged Suzuki Escudo; lastly, in 1993 the brand began selling a badge engineered version of the Daewoo Lemans as the Asuna SE in base trim hatchbacks and sedans, and as the Asüna GT as a higher trim hatchback. The Pontiac Lemans model name was dropped altogether to coincide with the release of the Asuna SE / GT.
So Long, Asuna
Unfortunately, Asüna was never able to match the sales of Geo vehicles. As a result, the Asüna marque was discontinued in 1994. The Asuna SE / GT and Asuna Sunfire were subsequently dropped from GM Canada’s product lineup and the Asuna Sunrunner was later rebadged as an Isuzu model. The brand disappeared completely in the 1995 year.
