What is a Wheel Bearing Hub and what does it do? Your front wheel hub bearings are an important part of your vehicle's steering, suspension, and braking systems. The front hub bearings typically mount on the end of the front spindle (knuckle), between the spindle and your front brake rotor. The hub itself is what holds the brake rotor and wheel onto the vehicle. How Do I know if my Front Wheel Bearing needs to be replaced? A worn out hub bearing will usually make a grinding sound which is more noticeable when turning in the direction of the side with the worn hub. ABS and wheel speed sensors are often built into the hub itself. This means that if the sensor is not working, the entire wheel hub assembly has to be replaced. Can I replace a Wheel Bearing / Wheel Hub myself? Wheel hubs & wheel bearings are usually a job that requires some automotive experience. If you live in a dry, low-rust area, then they are far easier to replace. In the areas where vehicles rust, hubs can sometimes be a bear to remove. Use plenty of rust penatrating oil, and gather up as much patience as possibly before beginning the job. If you have never replaced a wheel bearing before, a service manual is invaluable for a job like this.
