What is a the purpose of the Accelerator Pedal Sensor? Unlike the cable driven design used on older vehicles, many modern vehicles use a "drive by wire" system to connect the gas pedal to the engine's throttle body. A sensor on the pedal tells the engine's computer how much the pedal has been pressed, which in turn relays this info to a motor on the throttle body and allows fresh air into the engine.
How do I know if my sensor has gone bad? If you press the gas pedal and the throttle body does not turn the throttle blade to allow air into the engine, you may have a bad sensor. If this sensor fails, you will typically see a "check engine" light appear on the dash stating theres an issue with the pedal or throttle circuit.
