Your cars radiator fan clutch is an important, but often overlooked part of your vehicles cooling system. Most vehicles have either electric cooling fans, or a fan driven off the front of the engine to help airflow through the radiator. A radiator fan clutch is found on the fans that run off of the engine. The fan clutch is designed to engage when the engine and radiator get up to or over operating temperature. At startup when the engine is cool or at highway speeds the fan clutch is designed to disengage to help efficiency of the engine. Some symptoms of a bad fan clutch are overheating, and oil and dirt saturated cooling fins. Over time the seals on the fan clutch can wear out causing the fluid to leak out, and the fan clutch will no longer engage effectively. If you can easily spin your fan blade by hand with the engine up to temperature AND YOUR ENGINE TURNED OFF it's time to replace your radiator fan clutch. |
