What does a Knock Sensor do? A knock sensor works like a tuned microphone to pick up pinging in the engine
What is "pinging"? In order to operate correctly, your engine requires that the air and fuel mixture inside the cylinders ignites at a very specific time. When this mixture accidently detonates when its not supposed to, it disturbs the cycle occuring in all of the cylinders and creates a noise commonly referred to as "pinging"
Why would a knock sensor need to be changed? As with any sensor, they can fail over time and no longer function correctly. Partial failure can result in the sensor falsely detecting knock, where complete failure will result in no detection at all (real or false knock).
