EGR Valve |
The EGR valve or Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve in your vehicle is a critical part of the emission reduction system. The EGR valve uses vacuum from the induction system or a signal from the computer to open a passage and allow exhaust to re-enter the incoming air-fuel mixture. The EGR valve is usually open when your engine is warm and maintaining a constant speed. The exhaust gasses re-enter the air-fuel mixture. Most of the fuel is burned out of the exhaust gas. The reintroduced mixture that comes from the EGR valve actually reduces the temperature of the combustion. This process results in both increased gas mileage and reduced Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions. Symptoms of an EGR Valve malfunction: It is possible to diagnose some EGR valve problems. Consult your vehicle's repair manual and follow all precautions when performing any type of diagnosis.
2. When the vehicle is idling, squeeze up on the bottom of the EGR valve diaphragm.
If the engine speed does not change, or you can feel hitches in the movement of the valve, replace the valve.
Reconnect the EGR valve after the test. Operating your vehicle on a public road with disabled emission equipment could violate the law. Many manufacturers recommend replacing the EGR valve every 50,000 miles as preventative maintenance. Cleaning an EGR valve is not recommended. This can result in harmful contaminents entering your engine or in damage to the EGR diaphragm and can cause permanent failure of the EGR valve.
