The distributor cap sits on top of the distributor housing and, with the help of the rotor button underneath, transmits electricity from the ignition coil to the spark plug wires. Over time, the distributor cap can become brittle and crack, allowing moisture to get into the distributor assembly. In other cases, the distributor cap electrical connections may become worn or covered in carbon and not allow electricity to pass through.
