How does a Brake Rotor Work?

Brake Rotors are major components in a disc brake system.  The rotors bolt onto the wheel hubs or axles, and spin at the same rate as the wheels.  Each rotor has a brake caliper that floats just above the rotor's surface, patiently awaiting the next stomp of the brake pedal.  When the pedal is pressed, the brake fluid rushes into the calipers and squeezes the brake pads against the rotors with tremendous force.  The friction between the pads and the rotors slow the rotation of the axles and in turn, the wheels, eventually bringing you to a safe and reliable stopping point.

How do I know if my Brake Rotors need to be replaced?
In the past, it was common to have brake rotors resurfaced when they were warped or when replacing brake pads.  This was possible only when there was enough metal left on the rotor to do so.  However, within the last 5-10 years, the price of replacement brake rotors has come way down, and it has become more common to replace the rotors whenever the pads are changed. So if your pads are nearly down to the bottoms of the wear indicators or your rotors are pulsating through your steering wheel, it may be time for replacements.

Can I replace Brake Rotors myself?

For most DIY'ers this is very doable.  Just keep in mind that the brakes are the only thing stopping you from the person in front of you. If you are not 100% sure that you can safely replace the brakes, it is best left to a professional.
