    Brake Drums

Cadillac Brake Drums Drum brakes have been used on cars and trucks for nearly as long as motorized vehicles have existed.  They are still used today because they are simple in design, work great, and require little maintenance.

    Brake Drum Features:

Brand New, not remanufactured or rebuilt
    Direct replacement
Built to strict quality control standards

How does a Brake Drum work?
The way they work is quite clever really.  When you push the brake pedal, the hydraulic brake fluid rushes from the master cylinder through the brake lines and into the wheel cylinders.  The wheel cylinders take all of that hydraulic pressure and push outward on the brake shoes. Since the brake drums fully encase the brake shoes, they immediately come in contact with each other as they are forced outward.  The friction between the shoes and the brake drums slows the rotation of the brakes drums and in-turn, the axles & wheels.

How do I know if my Brake Drums need to be replaced?
Drum wear typically needs to measured with calipers to see if the metal thickness is within specifications.  If your drums are grooved or worn unevenly, they likely need to be replaced.

Can I replace Brake Drums myself?
Yes. If you can get the old drums off your car, you have already won the battle, because that is the tough part of replacing them.  Typically the old drums rust themselves onto the wheel hubs and do not want to release themselves.  There are many methods of removing stuck drums, but patience wins nearly every time.
