Originally offered as a trim package on the 1961 Pontiac Tempest, the Pontiac Lemans became its own automobile with the 1963 model. This lasted for only that year however, as the Tempest was upgraded to the GM-A platform, the LeMans was demoted to become another trim package. In 1971 the Tempest was retired and the Pontiac LeMans badge was used to describe all intermediate size Pontiac vehicles. The Luxury LeMans intermediate was the top of the line offering, with a plush interior and available as a sedan or coupe. Another model, the LeMans Sport was similar to the Luxury LeMans, but available as a two door hard top or convertible, equipped with bucket seats. Through the 70's the LeMans line became progressively larger to accommodate new safety regulations like 5 mph crash bumpers and so on. However, from the '78 model until the final release in '81 saw the downsizing of the Pontiac LeMans. In 1982 the Pontiac LeMans was rebadged as the Pontiac Bonneville. Released again by Daewoo motors from 1988-93, the Pontiac LeMans enjoyed a brief return, but poor sales resulted in its final cancellation. In its prime, the LeMans enjoyed some fame, being featured in "Smokey and the Bandit" and in the famous cemetery scene of "Night of the Living Dead."
