The Pontiac Catalina began as part of the Chieftain series in 1950-58 as a designation for hard top convertibles. The Chieftain was dropped in '59 and was renamed as the Catalina, becoming the new entry level full size model. The '59 Pontiac models experienced significant change, being changed from the GM-A body to the GM-B body, as well as integrating the "split grill" Pontiac is known for. Pontiac designed the Catalina to be a performance vehicle, as evident by V8 engines being a constant and available 2+2 options package with a sturdier suspension and bucket seats. Throughout the 60's the Pontiac Catalina was built with progressively stronger engines, fitting the muscle car, performance focus of the era. However, as with most performance cars, the 70's brought downsizing and horsepower reductions as strict federal emissions policies took there toll. The Pontiac Catalina was no exception. V6 engines now became more prominent; Pontiac V8 engines were completely banned from California in 1977 due to inability to meet emissions standards. 1981 marked the final year for the Pontiac Catalina, being replaced by the Bonneville as GM tried to step away from the full size model market. A popular vehicle, over 3.8 million Catalina's had been sold since 1959.
