The Oldsmobile Cutlass began as a sports coupe in 1954 and with help from designer Irving Rybicki, evolved into the A-body compact Cutlass for the 1961 model released in 1960. Gaining popularity throughout the 60's and becoming revered during the 70's, the Oldsmobile Cutlass became America's best selling car in 1976. During the 80's however, production of the Oldsmobile Cutlass took a peculiar twist when the cutlass name was applied to four different vehicles with separate body types and the plain Oldsmobile Cutlass moniker faded away. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais compact car, Cutlass Ciera midsize sedan, Cutlass Cruiser station wagon, and Cutlass Supreme midsize luxury car were all produced during the 80's, causing much confusion in the automotive market. However, the original Oldsmobile Cutlass name was brought back for production 1997-1999, being the final Oldsmobile to bear the Cutlass badge. Being replaced by the smaller Alero, the Oldsmobile Cutlass went out with class, having reliably served drivers for nearly forty years.
