The Ford Aerostar was Ford's first entry into the minivan market, being built to compete with the Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager. In production from model years '86 to '97, the Aerostar won Motor Trend's truck of the year for 1990. A rear wheel drive minivan similar to that of the Chevy Astro, the Ford Aerostar was also built on a truck platform. This gave the Aerostar minivan the ability to perform the rugged heavy duty tasks that Ford trucks could do, while comfortably carrying up to 7 passengers. Optional trim packages include XT, XLT Luxury model, Eddie Bauer, and the sport option. Starting in 1990, Ford offered an electronic all wheel drive option to provide the Aerostar with more traction. Combining that with a four speed automatic transmission and 4.0L V6 engine, the Ford Aerostar had plenty of power and torque to carry passengers or cargo. Discontinued in '97 The Ford Aerostar was replaced by newer more stylish Ford Windstar.
