The Dodge Dakota is an entry level midsize pickup truck first introduced in 1986. The Dakota was created to fill the gap between compact truck fuel economy and the roomy cargo space of a full size truck. The first generation '87-'96 of Dodge Dakotas came as 2 door pickups or convertibles. '89 sported the first convertible as well as the first and only Shelby Dakota, equipped with a 5.2L V8 engine. '92 saw the introduction of the Magnum spec engines and electronic fuel injection. The result was nearly 235 horsepower, a large increase over the modest 140 horsepower offered with prior equivalently sized engines. The second generation Dodge Dakota featured more revisions, with the new models having Dodge Ram inspired styling, but retaining their midsize form. The third generation grew slightly larger, with more comfortable amenities being added. Featuring a choice of V6-V8 magnum or V8 HO (high output) engines, the Dodge Dakota still has plenty of power for a midsize pickup. Nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000, the Dodge Dakota is a midsize pickup with full size power and compact fuel economy.
