For nearly 50 years the Cadillac El Dorado was a high class personal luxury vehicle. First offered for the '53 model year, the El Dorado received much praise for its sleek lines and protruding tailfins. Perhaps the most famous of the El Dorado's is the Brougham. For approximately $13,000, the'57 El Dorado Brougham could be purchased. Due to its high price, fewer than 1,000 were sold, making it one of the most collectible Cadillac's to date. The El Dorado changed with the times as the tailfins were lost and the curves became angles as the 70's era approached. In 1981 the El Dorado was equipped with a cylinder deactivation system, designed to turn off certain cylinders during low power drawing stages to conserve gas. Unfortunately as GM hit hard times the El Dorado shrunk in size and appeal to consumers. In 2002 the 50th anniversary and final model was released, putting to end one of the most innovative Cadillac automobile lines produced.
