In 1982, fans of the Buick Regal got a surprise when the Grand National appeared. A T-Type regal coupe, the Grand National was aimed at performance and became an instant hit. Named after the NASCAR Grand National racing series, the Grand National was a stylish blacked out performance machine. Affectionately named the "Darth Vader Car," the '86 and '87 Grand Nationals are highly collectible. 1987 saw the release of the Buick GNX. Produced by McLaren and ASC, the GNX is the most powerful of the Grand Nationals. The GNX was designed as a send off tribute, as the following year the Grand National would be modified for front wheel drive, which engineers admitted isn't capable of generating as much power. Actually faster than the factory specifications, the GNX was capable of 0-60 in just 4.7 seconds instead of 5.7 seconds listed in the factory data. For its time the GNX could provide serious competition to many sports cars of the day, for a significantly lower price. Eventually the Grand National and GNX were discontinued, but still are prized today, as a low cost, high performance car for tearing up the quarter mile.
