The Celica Evolved

This Japanese native was introduced in 1980 as an improved version of the Celica, known as the Toyota Celica Camry. Yet after a two-year stint, the car’s name changed to Camry for the 1983 model year. Featuring front-wheel drive and aiming for the U.S. market, Toyota Americanized the car by increasing its size to a 102-inch wheelbase, and it rivaled the Honda Accord with a 2 liter, inline 4 engine that supported 91 horsepower. Unlike the Accord, the Camry offered four-doors in a hatchback or sedan style. It originally came in two trim levels with automatic or manual transmission: the DX or the upgraded LE.

The Camry's Growing Improvements

As the Camry and Accord continually boxed each other, much of the Camry’s changes were made in an attempt to oust Honda’s Accord. The first major improvements occurred under the hood. In 1988, two years after the Accord’s release, the Camry improved its quiet drive with a 2.5 liter, V6 engine that wielded 158 horsepower. It was also accessible in all-wheel drive, and by the early ‘90’s an optional antilock brake system was provided.

Much of the Camry’s life followed the motto: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Years would go by with the car unchanged, until a new generation sprouted in 1992 with a wider and taller body accompanied with a larger cabin and modern exterior. The I4 engine was capable of 130 horsepower, and the V6 improved to a whopping 185. Trim was now available in DX, LE, XLE, and SE. By 1997, the redesigned CE replaced the DX. The I4 increased to 133 horsepower and the V6 to 194 horsepower respectively. Each unveiled a sleeker, sharper-edged body that would help contribute to the Camry becoming the best-selling car in the U.S. for the year.

Not too many cars have been able to compete with this big seller. With great gas mileage, a stylish exterior, and undeniable reliability, the Toyota Camry has consistently risen to become the bestselling car in America for the last decade. Today, it offers a plethora of trim levels (CE, LE, SE, XLE, and Camry Hybrid for all the eco-conscious drivers out there) and is capable of driving up to 268 horsepower.

Did You Know This About the Camry?

The word “Camry” (translated from the pronunciation of the word kanmuri) means “crown” in Japanese. In its early years, the vehicle took on different names depending on the country it was from.

The Camry is the first car ever to feature hands-free calling. By connecting to Bluetooth and pressing a button on the steering wheel, drivers can make phone calls through voice commands without using their hands.
